Fort Hunt (Alexandria)

When you live in Fort Hunt…

…you’ll be surrounded by parks, trails and an exceptional suburban lifestyle. The Washington Post called Fort Hunt a “1950’s Suburban Dream” and I have to agree. Driving through the neighborhood on any given weekend, you’ll see people out biking, running and tending to their yards and gardens. Living in Fort Hunt is far enough away from DC to be more tranquil but it’s an easy drive, bus or metro ride into the City. Many of the residents bike into Old Town on the Mount Vernon trail and spend the morning or afternoon exploring the historic sites of Alexandria.

Patricia’s Five Favorites

  • Fort Hunt Park

The original Fort Hunt was built in 1897 on the bank of the Potomac River to defend the area from a naval attack. Today, it’s a large, beautiful public park with open fields, walking trails, bike trails and pavilions that can be reserved for parties. There are several remnants from Fort Hunt including guard towers, gun emplacements and artillery observation point.

  • Mount Vernon Estates

With gorgeous grounds and the historic home of George Washington, it’s a great place to spent time throughout the year. Since it’s usually at the top of any “must see” list for visiting family and friends, it’s worth getting an annual membership. Events at the estate are scheduled throughout the year including the Virginia Wine Festival, Colonial Days recreation and Christmas at Mount Vernon.

  • Sherwood Hall Library

Not just for books but for the events! On Wednesdays (April to Oct), you’ll find a wonderful farmers market in the parking lot. There’s a tech lab, including a 3-D printer, on the second floor which hosts computer classes throughout the year. There are private study rooms, a Read to Me room for little ones and an entire section for younger readers. In addition, there are meeting rooms which can be reserved for local clubs.

  • Mount Vernon Trail (NPS)

Stretches from George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate, 18 miles along the Potomac River, to Theodore Roosevelt Island. Connecting with other regional trails makes it a favorite of bikers, runners and walkers alike. Facilities such as restrooms, water fountains and trash cans are found along the route.tion goes here

  • Variety Store

Stepping into the Variety Store in Hollin Hall is a step back in time. The store is chock full of a large variety of items. You can find beautiful photo frames, candles of all sizes, school supplies, holiday decorations, kitchen items, nostalgic candies and much, much more. Their official motto is “If you cannot find it here, you don’t need it.” I have to agree, I’ve always found what I’m looking for in the store so I must have needed it!
