Tips When Moving With A Pet

Prior to Moving Day
Moving is stressful for most pets but with some care and preparation, the transition can be less stressful and possibly a smooth one.

1) Contact your vet for a copy of your pet’s medical file, immunization record, certificates, and proof of current rabies shot. Refill any medications needed during the moving period.

2) Pack a separate bag for your pet with all their essential items to include food, water, grooming tools, medications, immunization records, towels, poop bags, toys and an extra leash.

3) Make sure your pet’s microchip is registered and the information is updated with your phone number. Your pet should have identification on their collar in case they get separated from you.

4) In the weeks leading up to your move day, gradually acclimate your pet to their kennel or crate that you’ll be using for their transport. If traveling via car, start taking your pet on car rides, gradually increasing the duration. Hopefully this will help your pet feel less stress on moving day.

5) Check with your Realtor or friends in your new town for Veterinarian recommendations so you’ll have a contact number should your pet need medical care soon after you arrive at your new home.

During Your Move and Arrival at Your New Home:

1) On move-in day, strongly recommend leaving your pet with a trusted friend or at a kennel so they are away from the hustle and bustle of the movers. But if that’s not possible, place your pet in a room which is off limits to the movers. Be sure they have water and comfort items. Attempt to keep their routine as normal as possible including the same feeding and walking times.

2) When you arrive at your new home, find a room where your pet will be most comfortable and away from the movers bringing your belongings into the home. Place a large sign on the door indicating the room is off limits to the movers.

3) When your moving team has departed, double check the house to be sure all doors leading outside and windows are secured. If you have a fenced yard, check for any gaps and make sure the gate is closed/locked.

4) Place your pet’s items in similar locations as they were in your previous home and stick to as similar a routine as you had prior to the move.

Here’s wishing you a stress free and smooth move!
